In line with the observance of the “20th National Dental Health Month,” the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Philippine Dental Association (PDA) have joined forces once again to promote oral well-being among children. Pursuant to Regional Memorandum No. 063, s. 2024, this annual celebration runs from January 28 to February 28, 2024, embodying decades of dedication and progress in fostering healthy smiles across the nation.
Themed “Celebrating Decades of Healthy Smiles,” this year’s commemoration pays tribute to the enduring legacy of two decades of concerted efforts by DepEd and PDA. Their unwavering commitment has transformed National Dental Health Month into a cornerstone event, significantly impacting oral health awareness and practices among the youth.
The festivities kicked off with the National Toothbrushing Day (NTD) on February 5, 2024, at Asinan Elementary School. The event saw the enthusiastic participation of various organizations, including the Philippine Dental Association Olongapo City Chapter, District 301-D1 International Association of Lions Club, Division Dentists and Nurses, and select students. Among the highlights were the initiation of school-wide campaigns to raise awareness about oral health and the “Toothbrushing Day” dubbed “Sang Milyong Sipilyo” Sabayang Pagsisipilyo.
The program was graced with the presence of esteemed guests including Dr. Gina Samsel Ocampo, President of PDA-Olongapo Chapter, who presented an overview of the “Isang Milyong Sipilyo, Angat Ngiting Pilipino” program, emphasizing its significance in promoting oral hygiene nationwide. Mr. Ramon Fernandez, Chairperson of District 301-D1 International Association of Lions Club, conveyed a message as a program partner, highlighting the collaborative efforts towards oral health advocacy.
OIC-Schools Division Superintendent, Dr. Imelda P. Macaspac, delivered the keynote address, underscoring the importance of instilling proper oral care habits from an early age. Following the speeches, the distribution of toothbrushes and toothpaste ensued, ensuring that every participant had the essential tools for maintaining oral hygiene.
Simultaneous nationwide toothbrushing sessions further reinforced the importance of regular brushing in preventing dental issues. As National Dental Health Month continues to unfold, it serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to prioritize oral health and empower future generations with the knowledge and resources needed to maintain healthy smiles for years to come.
