By Arlene Dela Rea

Olongapo City, Philippines – On December 30, 2024, the Department of Education (DepEd) Olongapo, in collaboration with local government units (LGUs), marked the 128th anniversary of the martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal with a series of meaningful events that honored the national hero’s legacy. Spearheaded by Officer-in-Charge-Schools Division Superintendent, Dr. Imelda P. Macaspac, the occasion was commemorated with reverence and gratitude for Rizal’s contributions to the country’s freedom and progress.

The highlight of the celebration took place at the Rizal Triangle, where the city’s government led the Wreath Laying Ceremony. The site, known for its imposing Rizal monument, was packed with government personnel and, notably, overwhelmed by a large contingent of DepEd staff. Hundreds of DepEd personnel, including teachers, learners especially the Boy Scouts of the Philipines and school administrators, joined in the solemn tribute, demonstrating their unwavering respect for the national hero.

A key moment in the ceremony was the floral offering to Rizal, which was followed by a heartfelt gesture of generosity from the DepEd community. In a show of solidarity and support for the future of Olongapo’s youth, the Department, alongside the 40 School Heads and the School Parents-Teachers Association (SPTA), donated a total of ₱48,411 to support the city’s scholars. This amount was raised through a campaign that encouraged a ₱1 per learner contribution, underscoring the collective effort of the Olongapo educational community to make a meaningful impact.

The donation, which will benefit the City Scholars initiated by City Mayor Rolen C. Paulino Jr., serves as a lasting tribute to Rizal’s unwavering commitment to education and the betterment of the nation. Through the leadership of DepEd Olongapo and the support of the local school community, this commemoration not only honored Rizal’s memory but also invested in the future of young minds in the city. As the event drew to a close, attendees were reminded of the importance of Rizal’s ideals, which continue to inspire future generations to strive for knowledge, justice, and nation-building.
