Olongapo City, Philippines – Education leaders in Olongapo City came together on January 15, 2025, to strengthen literacy initiatives during the Orientation on the Utilization of SRA Reading Remediation Packages for the Reading Program. Held at the Subic Bay Travelers Hotel & Event Center, Inc., in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone, the event aimed to empower educators and students alike by enhancing proficiency strategies for reading.
The event was made possible through the unwavering support of Dr. Imelda P. Macaspac, OIC- Schools Division Superintendent together with Ilynne S. Samonte, CESE, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent. Dr. Eleonor C. Cayabyab, who leads the Curriculum Implementation Division, helped advance the program by endorsing the initiative of Dr. Raquel F. Queyquep, EPS of the Learning Resource Management and Development System (LRMDS). Education Program Supervisors and Public Schools District Supervisors also contributed significantly including the team members, Ms. Mary Onyx M. Umayam, Librarian II and Baby Lea C. Divino, PDO II.
The event was attended by Principals, Assistant Principals, and Head Teachers, who played an essential role in ensuring the maximum utilization of SRA Reading Remediation packages in their respective schools.
Nancy Almonte, an SRA Reading Consultant, shared the vision and benefits of the Reading Laboratory Kit. She emphasized the program’s focus on enhancing reading comprehension, vocabulary, and independent learning while addressing specific skill gaps.
For students, the Reading Laboratory offers opportunities to develop better reading habits, cultivate responsibility, and discover a lifelong passion for reading. Teachers benefit from clear assessment guidelines and support systems, enabling them to guide students effectively. Schools gain a flexible and practical tool to boost reading proficiency and academic success, integrating seamlessly with core educational programs.
The orientation highlighted the important role of teachers in promoting the value of learning to read. Since the ability to read is the primary gateway of learners to achieve in their academics and excel in other co-curricular activities, this will be an added move to gradually arrest illiteracy and increase the number of independent readers among the learners in elementary level.
