SDO Olongapo City Strengthens Disaster Preparedness Through Fire Drills and Symposiums

By Glenn D. Tipay, EPS II-SMN

SDO Olongapo City, September 8, 2025 — In line with Republic Act 10121, or the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010, and Department of Education Order No. 50, s. 2011, which institutionalizes disaster preparedness in all government offices and schools, the Schools Division Office (SDO) of Olongapo City has intensified its disaster risk reduction initiatives.

As part of the nationwide observance of Fire Prevention Month and in compliance with DepEd Order No. 53, s. 2022 the SDO Olongapo City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Unit organized a fire drill and a disaster preparedness symposium.

The activities were spearheaded by SDO Olongapo City DRRM Coordinator Erwin A. Castillejo, in partnership with the Olongapo City Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP). During the symposium, BFP personnel discussed proper fire safety practices, including the correct use of fire extinguishers and essential steps to take during fire incidents.

The BFP also presented fire safety tips and shared best practices in mitigating fire hazards, reinforcing the importance of vigilance and preparedness in reducing risks.

An actual fire extinguisher demonstration followed, where several SDO personnel volunteered to practice fire suppression techniques under the guidance of BFP officers. The hands-on activity ensured that participants were not only informed but also trained in responding to real-life fire emergencies.

According to Castillejo, the initiative aims to “strengthen the capacity of SDO personnel in effectively responding to emergencies, ensure workplace safety, and foster a culture of disaster readiness within schools and offices.”

Through these proactive measures, SDO Olongapo City reaffirms its strong commitment to disaster risk reduction programs—providing safer, more resilient working environments for SDO personnel.
